St. Phillip / the Martyr Cycle is het nieuwe multimedia hoofdstuk van The Phillip Project reeks van Michael Jahoda en Pasi Granqvist.

In Phillips worsteling met de grote levensvragen ontbrak nog één prangende: waar zou ik voor willen sterven? Zouden ik, jij of wij, levend in de huidige samenleving zo sterk in iets kunnen geloven dat we bereid zijn ons eigen leven op te offeren? In deze performance van spoken word, dans en video verkent Phillip het leven van een martelaar en zoekt hij naar dat wat misschien wel waard is om voor te sterven. Het publiek bevindt zich binnen de installatie en wordt omgeven door het beeld en de performers.

Phillip is het alter ego van  Michael Jahoda (1966, New York). Jahoda is danser, choreograaf en docent. Hij studeerde aan het Alvin Ailey American Dance Center in New York City, waar hij deel uitmaakte van het Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble. Sinds 1995 staat zijn huis in Nederland. Hier danste hij in verschillende stukken van Anouk van Dijk en was hij te zien in Springdance, CaDance en het Holland Dance Festival.

Pasi Granqvist (Kotka, Finland 1972) is beeldend kunstenaar. Afgestudeerd aan de Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, richt hij zich in zijn werk op video en installaties.

St. Phillip / the Martyr is a new multi-media chapter in the Phillip Project Series created by Michael Jahoda and Pasi Granqvist for the Phillip Project, in collaboration with composer Maarten Ornstein and live performance by choir Jan & Alleman. It will be comprised in equal parts of spoken word, dance, video and music. The public will be placed inside the installation and surrounded by the media images and performers.

Throughout the 16 interrelated episodes in the Phillip Project Series, Phillip has been on an endless madcap journey to explore, define and defend his own sense of freedom; both in life and in the afterlife. (St.) Phillip, the main character and leitmotif of the Phillip Project Series, will explore the concept of martyrdom in a cycle of martyr-deaths as he searches for “something bigger than himself ” that is worth dying for.

The aim of the Phillip Project is to highlight and humanize questions of freedom, life and death and to create multi-layered and multi-media environments that invite the public to immerse themselves in some “big” questions.
