    By Annelys de Vet

Europe is an abstract entity. Who or what bears influence upon the perception of the union that is called Europe? Flags become political statements, reflecting critique and personal interpretations. To what extent can graphic designers contribute to such an influence? In this workshop students are invited to design several flags for Europe. Personal perception and vision are the starting points for these designs: become an author writing in images.

    JohnJane.tiff copyFilm: John & Jane

    By Ashim Ahluwalia

A fresh new blend of observational documentary and tropical science-fiction, John & Jane follows the stories of six call centre agents that answer American 1-800 numbers in a Mumbai call center. John & Jane, directed by Ashim Ahluwalia discovers a young generation of urban Indians who are beginning to live between the real and the virtual. However, this futuristic world of American aliases and simulated reality is not science fiction, these are the times in which we live. John & Jane raises disturbing questions about the nature of personal identity and what it means to be Indian in a 21st century globalised world.

Theatre: It is what it is

    By Andreas Bachmair

A performance about the power of imagination. Andreas Bachmair acts and narrates, creating a landscape of dramatic scenes based on the original interviews with call centre employees for Views on the West. He assembles statements, changes contexts and sheds light on them from a different perspective. A performance which plays with different points of view, real and surreal. Central in the performance is the interaction between audience and theatre maker - between the familiar and the unfamiliar - the colour green, natural beauty, conviction, freedom, life and death and the here and now.

March 20 from 19h00 until 19h30, Zeebelt Theatre

    Lecture: Stereotypes

Esther Cleven (conservator graphic design at De Beyerd, Museum for graphic design in Breda) will give with her column an introduction to the speakers Rajesh Dahiya and Anne Miltenburg. Rajesh (founder Co-Design studio, India) will give his view on the West, using the posters from the exhibition to make his points clear. Anne (Design Director at OrientationLab & member of the selection committee at Dutch Design Awards) will take on the role of 'devil's advocate' and look for the sharp edges in the Eastern and Western views of each other.

    With: B.L.O.T.
B.L.O.T. is the Basic Love Of Things - a collective based out of New Delhi, India that works with electronic music, film, art and design. As a live performance act, BLOT is a live electronic music and visuals act, and has played in prominent club and festival venues in India, Germany, France, UK and Switzerland. For the performance at the Views on the West venue, BLOT will perform a short (approx 1 hour) mashup session that combines samples from popular India cinema, their own stop motion films and video works and some relevant sampled works mixed with electronic music (dubstep and minimal techno). While the performance itself will try to work towards the theme of the venue, we feel BLOT as an entity itself is a interesting and very contemporary example of whats happening in India right now, and in several ways our performance IS our view on the west.
